A Southern classic dessert that transforms stale bread into a comforting, indulgent treat. Infused with warm spices, plump raisins, and finished with a rich bourbon sauce, this bread pudding is a delightful finale to any meal.
– 6 cups day-old French or brioche bread, cubed
– 2 cups milk
– 1 cup heavy cream
– 4 large eggs
– 1 cup granulated sugar
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– 1 cup raisins (optional)
– 2 tablespoons butter, melted
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
2. Spread the bread cubes evenly in the dish. If using, sprinkle the raisins over the bread.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together milk, heavy cream, eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, pressing down gently to ensure all pieces are soaked.
5. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the top.
6. Allow the mixture to sit for about 15 minutes so the bread can absorb the custard.
7. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the pudding is set and the top is lightly golden.
8. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Optionally, serve with a warm bourbon sauce.
For an extra decadent touch, serve warm with a drizzle of bourbon sauce or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
