Guava Pastelitos are a beloved Cuban pastry featuring a flaky puff pastry filled with sweet guava paste and creamy cheese. These delightful treats are perfect for breakfast, dessert, or as a snack, offering a harmonious blend of flavors and textures.

Ingredients

– 1 package (1 lb) frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed

– 8 oz guava paste

– 8 oz cream cheese, softened

– 1/3 cup powdered sugar

– 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

– 1 egg (for egg wash)

– Powdered sugar (for dusting)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Roll out one sheet of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 4 equal squares. Repeat with the second sheet, giving you 8 squares total.

3. Slice the guava paste and cream cheese into 1 oz pieces (about ¼-inch thick).

4. Place one slice of cream cheese and one slice of guava paste diagonally across the center of each puff pastry square.

5. Fold the corners of the pastry over the filling to form a triangle or rectangle, sealing the edges by pressing them together.

6. Beat the egg and brush it over the top of each pastry.

7. Place the pastries on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.

8. Remove from oven and let cool slightly. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

– For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of vanilla extract to the cream cheese filling.

– If guava paste is unavailable, guava jam can be used as a substitute.

– These pastries are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
