Indian Frybread is a traditional Native American dish featuring a crispy exterior and a soft, pillowy interior. Its versatile nature makes it perfect for both sweet and savory toppings, reflecting a rich cultural heritage.

Ingredients

– 2 cups all-purpose flour

– 1 tablespoon baking powder

– 1/2 teaspoon salt

– 1 cup warm water (adjust as needed)

– Vegetable oil (for frying)

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.

2. Gradually add the warm water while mixing until a dough forms.

3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth, about 3-5 minutes.

4. Cover the dough and let it rest for 15 minutes.

5. Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten into a round disc.

6. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan to 350°F (175°C).

7. Fry each dough round for 2-3 minutes per side or until golden brown.

8. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels. Serve warm.

Notes

– Enjoy the frybread fresh for the best texture.

– It can be served as a base for savory dishes like tacos or topped with honey, powdered sugar, or fruit for a sweet treat.

– Adjust water as needed to achieve the right dough consistency.
