A flavorful low-carb alternative to traditional sweet and sour dishes, featuring tender turnips glazed in a tangy sauce with crispy bacon and aromatic spices.

Ingredients

– 2 pounds turnips, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces

– 4 cups chicken broth

– 4 slices raw bacon, diced

– 2 tablespoons diced onions

– 2 tablespoons brown sugar substitute (e.g., Swerve)

– 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

– 1 tablespoon tamari (or soy sauce)

– 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

– 1/4 teaspoon salt

– 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Instructions

1. In a large stockpot, boil turnips in chicken broth for 30 minutes or until fork-tender. Drain and set aside.

2. While turnips are cooking, in a large skillet over medium-high heat, sauté bacon and onions until bacon reaches desired crispness. Do not drain bacon grease.

3. Add brown sugar substitute, red wine vinegar, tamari, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Whisk to combine and simmer for 2-3 minutes.

4. Add cooked turnips to the skillet and toss to coat in the sauce. Cook until heated through. Serve warm.

Notes

– For extra flavor, consider adding a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes for some heat.

– Ensure you’re using a sugar substitute that measures like sugar, such as Swerve, to achieve the desired sweetness.

– Tamari can be substituted with soy sauce if preferred.
