Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb spaghetti, cooked al dente
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb Italian sausage (casings removed)
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups marinara sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil, chopped (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a large pot, cook the spaghetti according to package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sautéing until softened.
  • Add the ground beef and Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking up any large chunks; drain any excess fat.
  • Stir in the marinara sauce and diced tomatoes. Let the meat sauce simmer for 10 minutes, and season with salt and pepper.
  • In a greased 9×13-inch casserole dish, layer half of the cooked spaghetti evenly. Spoon half of the meat sauce over the spaghetti.
  • Dollop the ricotta cheese over the sauce, then sprinkle with half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.
  • Repeat the layers with the remaining spaghetti, meat sauce, and cheeses.
  • Top the casserole with breadcrumbs and an extra sprinkle of mozzarella cheese.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, until the top is bubbly and lightly golden.

  • Garnish with chopped fresh basil before serving. Let rest for 5 minutes for easier slicing.

Notes

  • For a milder flavor, substitute the Italian sausage with extra ground beef.
  • Allow the casserole to cool slightly before serving to enhance the flavors and improve the texture.

  • Feel free to add extra Parmesan cheese on top for an extra cheesy crust.
