Fluffy and delicate cream puffs filled with a rich and creamy custard, a beloved family recipe that’s perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the water and butter over medium heat. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally, until the butter is melted.
  3. Once the mixture boils, add the flour and salt all at once. Stir continuously until the dough forms a ball and pulls away from the sides of the pan, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat.
  4. Allow the dough to cool for a few minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition, until the dough becomes smooth and glossy.
  5. Using a spoon or piping bag, drop or pipe tablespoon-sized portions of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  6. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until the puffs are golden brown and puffed up. Do not open the oven door during baking. Once done, let the cream puffs cool completely on a wire rack.
  7. While the puffs cool, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
  8. Once the puffs are cooled, carefully slice them in half. Fill the bottom half with whipped cream and place the top half back on. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can dust the cream puffs with powdered sugar before serving.
  • To make the cream puffs ahead of time, store them in an airtight container and fill them just before serving.
  • You can also fill the puffs with custard or pastry cream instead of whipped cream for a richer filling.
